The Dangers of Speeding While Driving

Utah has a bad reputation for how our drivers conduct themselves. Despite the overall kind, patient, and generally good nature of our citizens. We are famous for our habits of driving too fast and making aggressive maneuvers. Not only does bad driving lead to headaches and unnecessary stress, but it is dangerous. Utah Highway Patrol releases car crash data statistics regularly. Amazingly they report that between 93-95 of all vehicle accidents are caused by human error or misjudgment.

What is the largest factor in car crashes?

The largest culprit behind all collisions is speeding or driving faster than safe, given road conditions. In places like Salt Lake City, we are frequented by large snowstorms during the winter season. When the snow falls, it always leads to more accidents. Local news stations report hundreds of accidents in just 24 hours when roads are slick with ice and snow. After hearing this, you may be asking yourself, “Why do people speed at all?” That is a good question; let’s dig a little deeper into why people drive too fast.

Why do people drive too fast?

Heavy traffic can be frustrating: Hush hour typically occurs as people will work between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM and when they are going home between 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Drivers can become angry at standstill traffic and begin taking risks to move faster. Common examples include quickly changing lanes or slamming on the gas to get in front of slower-moving vehicles.

Running late: People are driving more and more these days. It is not uncommon for many to travels upwards of 100 miles a day during their normal routine. Most of us are familiar with the uncomfortable anxiety of running late for an important meeting. Many speeders are trying to shave minutes off their drive time by going 10 to 20 miles above posted speed limits.

Bad habits have formed over time: The truth of the matter is that in our own lives, traffic accidents are a rare occurrence. Perhaps speeders have become overconfident with their abilities, and their previous successes have led to a detachment from consequences. Eventually, risky driving will catch up to everyone in one way or another. Don’t allow the safety of modern vehicles to push you towards poor driving habits.
